Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464) had undertaken many diplomatic missions before he became Pope in 1458 under the name of Pius II. He later commissioned the Florentine architect-sculptor Bernardino Rossellino to transform the little village of Corsignano (where we was born) into the Renaissance masterpiece we know today as Pienza.
The following digital "etchings" of Pienza's piazza and its meandering quiet streets and picturesque vicoli were produced from photographs and sketches made between the years 1999 and 2001.
