Towers were built by nobles in Italy partially for defense, mostly for prestige. S. Gimignano originally had 72 towers and was called San Gimignano of the Fine Towers.
Little has changed in this 14th century hilltop village known also for its narrow streets lined with palaces and old houses and its churches with some of the finest examples of tre cento frescoes.
David's "etchings" of S. Gimignano were produced from photographs made between 1990 and 2001.
